Is UPI a Good Payment Method for Mobile Casino Players

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know that mobile usage has been on the rise for over a decade. Looking at the chart at Global Stats Counter, one can see that desktop usage has gone from 99% down to 42%, which has been replaced mainly by smartphones, but also by tablets. These days our phones are used for everything and casino gambling is no exception.

With dozens of mobile casinos popping up in India every year, many game craving Indians are wondering if UPI is a good payment method to use for their transactions. Having tested several casinos ourselves and thoroughly researched the gambling industry, our answer would be a solid yes. This explains why some Indian gambling sites such as 10Cric have reported it to be the most used payment method.

However, to answer the topic, one must ask what qualifies as a good payment method? In our opinion, five factors affect the mobile casino rating of one:

  1. How supported the payment method is
  2. The safety of the payment method
  3. How fast transactions are made
  4. What the minimum deposit is
  5. If transactions can be traced

Now, let’s have a closer look at these pointers.

1. UPI Support at Mobile Casinos

As can be viewed on the mobile casinos listed at GamblingBaba, UPI is a payment method supported by a wide range of reputable gambling sites. This goes hand in hand with the research we have made. Any gambling site targeted towards the Indian market seems to be offering UPI as a transaction option.

Unlike payment methods such as Visa, Mastercard, Skrill, and Neteller, which have been offered by all of our tested gambling sites, UPI has been much rarer to come across though. However, those sites that do not provide UPI as an option only seem to be sites that don’t support rupees or the Hindi language. They simply do not cater to Indian players at all.

2. The Safety of Using UPI

UPI is a mobile payment system that links your bank account to your mobile phone, allowing you to make easy transactions using a short and virtual payment address. This can be done through various UPI apps such as Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay. Confirmed by several users on a Quora post, the payment method is about as safe as it gets.

When you make transactions at mobile casinos, you will only enter your virtual payment address. You then have to confirm the transaction on your mobile phone, which is done by entering a unique PIN set by you. In other words, for anyone to make a transaction other than you, that person would have to know your unique PIN and have access to your phone.

Compared to Visa and Mastercard transactions where you openly share your card number on your screen, UPI is a much safer payment method.

3. Transaction Speed of UPI

Being an instant payment system, transactions are generally very fast with UPI. The Indian online Casino Genesis says that deposits and withdrawals are usually credited within 30 minutes. We can confirm this with the tests that we had made.

However, when doing our research, we noticed several different types of platforms that mobile casinos can use for UPI transactions. Exploring this further, we found that some of these platforms are faster than others.

While we haven’t been able to confirm it, our findings tell us that deposits and withdrawals could potentially take a few hours with some of the UPI platforms. These “slower platforms”, however, don’t seem to be used by the most reputable mobile casinos.

Our takeaway is that the transaction speed of UPI is fast but not as fast as payment methods such as Skrill and Neteller which are always instant. When it comes to deposits, Visa and Mastercard would also be faster options (always instant), while withdrawals would be much slower (2 – 5 working days).

4.    Minimum Deposit Amounts

Having tested several different casinos, it is clear to us that minimum deposit amounts can vary quite a lot between gambling sites. Anywhere from ₹300 up to ₹2,000. However, no matter the casino, we have noticed that UPI doesn’t have any higher limit than other payment methods – quite the opposite. Our findings tell us that UPI is usually the payment method with the lowest deposit limit.

5.    Tracing UPI Transactions

Not all Indian players would like to have their monetary transactions linked to gambling. Especially not if playing from a state where online gambling is illegal, such as Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, or Tamil Nadu.

In this category, e-Wallets such as Skrill and Neteller are the superior payment methods as these can never be traced. You would never deposit or withdraw directly between your bank and mobile casino, but the e-Wallet would always act as the middleman.

With UPI it’s a bit more complicated. There is no middleman, which means that the transaction is indeed linked between the casino and your bank. However, as most gambling sites are well-familiar with this being a touchy subject, they have made it a habit of disguising the transaction. Whether you’re making a deposit or withdrawal, your bank statement will rarely (or ever) show an indication of gambling.
